Websites

I have a little website for my business and I was kind of proud of it.  THEN I ran into this guy the other day that said he knew of someone who has the same type of business as me who is going gang-busters in her business (highly successful) because her website is optimized and she gets lots of phone calls because of it.  Supposedly optimization will cause your website to come up first in google (or other search engines) when someone searches for a business like yours in the neighborhood.  I’ve known about SEO or search engine optimization for many years.

Well, I looked up this chick’s site and she hasn’t even been around for one year (online) and yet her business is coming up first on google for our type of business in her area.  Used to be, aged sites…sites that had been around for a few years, had a huge advantage over brand new sites.  But not in her case.

Her website is nothing special at all!  Very simple.

Does it ever seem like some people have all the secrets to success and no matter how hard you try, you can’t figure them out?

I have felt like this for years.  It sounds like sour grapes but it just keeps getting more and more obvious that the game is fixed.

He DID mention that she paid (he estimates) a minimum of $2500 to have her website created and then she pays another $100 a month to keep it updated.

So yeah.  I guess it’s the money thing.  It’s so frustrating sometimes.  It doesn’t matter how good I am at what I do if no one knows about me.  And you need money for that.  Or so it seems.

Just venting.  Maybe I need to go to school for SEO next.

You mentioned having a friend/acquaintance who helped you set up your web site. Does that person know how to optimize your search results? Or know a third person who knows how to do that? Otherwise, is there a college or university nearby, with a student who might volunteer to figure out how to boost your search results?

I have a better “SEO” magic for you.

Take that $2500 and send it to google. Then they’ll put you on top without all the code and business guru junk.

Google takes bribes. They accept “government subsidies.” Just use your connections to see if you know anyone who works for google. Then, give him a few bucks. Boom…like magic! Better than Tony Robbins!

A thing to remember is that Google is a search engine , but not the ONLY search engine. Google is also a ad driven , and popularity search engine so if you spread your ads about to places OTHER than Craigs List ( I mean “as well ” ) then your “popularity” increases ( you DO like to be a popular girl , right ? )
If you look about , you’ll see that your city may be part of a “FreeNet ” , there may be a “Kijiji” , and other online local sites looking for advertisers ( that’s you ) , some for pay , some free ( sooooo YMMV ).
Even building another blog ( not so anonymously , and likely different theme .. ) , helps build a local presence .
