Stalker-Yes Really

Well I knew it would happen eventually.  I attracted the attention of a weirdo.  I was sitting in a parking lot in what I’ve always considered a safe area.  It’s near my go-to sleep spot.  I was talking on the phone to a friend and it was around 11pm.  I was too relaxed.  The place I was at is open late.  There were just a few cars in the parking lot.  I saw him staring at me with a big evil grin on his face.  He had curly hair and a hooked nose.  He wasn’t trying to hide his interest in me.  It’s like he KNEW I was vulnerable.  He went into the store.  I decided to change parking lots.  I wasn’t worried yet.

The parking lot wasn’t too far away.  I was yacking away with my friend and what do you know, all of a sudden there were headlights in my face and the guy drove right up close to my van, gave me the same strange (frightening to me now) smile and left.  I’m sure I looked as scared as I felt.  He left and I waited a bit, then figured, he’s gone, I’ll head to my nearby sleep spot.

I was still on the phone.  I’d told my friend what was happening, of course.  I parked and was going to get off the phone soon and go to sleep.  Well what do you know?  The guy found me.  Drove up really close to my car as if to say, “hahaha, I’ve found you again!”  This time, I’m furious!  The nerve of this guy I banged on my window and he drove away laughing.  Creepy!!! I banged on  my window with my fist and yelled at him to “get out of here!”

I called my friend C who lives in “my town” and stayed the night with her.  I’m so blessed to have her in my life.  I parked far from her house (I don’t want the guy to know where SHE lives) and a mutual male acquaintance picked me up and brought me there.

I’m bummed out because this means I’m not going to be able to use that sleep spot for a long time.  Perhaps never again….and it’s perfect.  In fact, I’m not sure I should free sleep in that town at all anymore!  My van is older so somewhat recognizable and I don’t know to what lengths he would go to find it again.  I went to an activity last night in another beach city and stayed kind of in between that city and my usual one.  I parked next to a house that’s probably worth $4-6 million.  Crazy huh?  I don’t know where I’ll be tonite.

I bought a cheap alarm system to put on my van windows so if someone tries to break into my van, I will know and hopefully the alarm will scare them off.

I kind of want to lay a trap for this freak, to be honest.  Hang out where he can find me, then make a display of power so he knows not to ever mess with me again.  That’s just a fantasy though.  It would be too dangerous.

Part of the reason I’m posting this is so there is a written record of it somewhere.  I have his license plate number too and I’m going to give it to a friend so if anything happens, maybe they’ll be able to find the jerk.  I hope nothing happens though!!  I didn’t tell the police because, as most of you know, I’m rather afraid of police.  I think I’d rather take my chance with the stalker than have a cop asking a bunch of irrelevant questions.

Well, I’ve been wanting something exciting to entertain you all with….hope you enjoyed today’s entry.  It’s all true.

More tomorrow.

About Maureen, Living in a Van

I'm a free-sleeper living in a van in the prettiest part of the world. I do this partly due to financial circumstances and partly because I love a good adventure.

OMG!!! That sounds like our worst nightmare as single female vandwellers. I am so glad that you had people near by to support you through it. That would be scary as shit. The police what would they say anyways? They would turn it on you the attention. Like what are you doing sleeping in your vehicle … etc. Since the guy did not say anything threatening or made an aggressive action against you. He was simply playing on your emotions which isn’t much of a crime even though it certainly feels like one. He knew how you were feeling and enjoyed scaring you at least that is what I would take from the situation. I am so lucky nothing like that has happened to me. I usually have my curtains up and in bed before 11pm so perhaps those type of guys come out later looking for their type of fun.

If that happened to me I wouldn’t go back into that area ever. Stalkers are scary since they vigilantly look for their prey and sorry to say it but he does seem to have the upper hand by scaring you like that.

But now you are doing a good thing. Arming your van with alarms. I sleep with my keys and cell phone right by me. My keys have an alarm for the car so any campers around would wake up and wonder what was going on. Then I also have a couple of knives at easy grasp if I have to take it that far to defend myself. I should buy the alarms that you say though now that I read this post. haha.

Big hugs and hope this doesn’t keep you from living in a van.

WoW what a creep! I wouldn’t go back there for a long time. if you see him again make sure you get his licence plate number. Take a picture of him with your phone and please CALL the police the next time!!!

Interesting. I can’t relate to the fear since I am not a woman. Well, do what you must. Keep your nose in the wind and your eyes on the skyline.

You are really handling this well and I think you have the right attitude to not allow him to scare you so much but just to be prepared for it next time. I see you are thinking about how to react and safeguard yourself so it’s all good. I’m glad you can 🙂 about it already. It shows that the initial shock of it is over. I’m glad.
