Sleeping In

pillowI stayed up kind of late (til around 11 pm) with C last night.  She’s a night owl.  It isn’t unusual for her to be up until 2 then sleep till 10 or 11 am.  I am in bed as early as 7am sometimes lately so as you can see, we have very different schedules.  Still we get together a few times a month.

C is an extraordinary woman who has never judged me at all for free-sleeping, reminding me at the beginning that many important people in history have been free-sleepers (AKA homeless).  She takes me to (pays for me at) very nice eating establishments whether I’m dressed for it or not.  Some of you might be shocked at some of the places I eat  fairly regularly.  I actually prefer the simpler restaurants but it is cool to eat amazing food in front of fountains (thank goodness for outside heat lamps).

So this morning I slept in.  Well first I got a text around 7(?) from a friend who needed a jump start.  I did that, then hung around the bad side of town for a bit to make sure his car would start again after he let the battery charge for a bit.  Then I went to a park on the best side of town, crawled in the back and slept for a few hours.  It still astounds me after almost 3 1/2 years that I can sleep in broad daylight in my van with people walking by and never get the cops called on me.  People just really don’t pay attention I guess.  I think that surely, once in a while people must notice me if they happen to glance at my front windshield.  The back windows are tinted but the front ones aren’t.  I wonder how often someone notices and just doesn’t care.  If you are one of those people that saw me, thanks a million for not calling the cops.

When I woke up today, it was to see trees and birds above me, and hear children playing.  What a wonderful way to re-start the day.

About Maureen, Living in a Van

I'm a free-sleeper living in a van in the prettiest part of the world. I do this partly due to financial circumstances and partly because I love a good adventure.

Very few care enough to call it in. It’s time out of their day. As long as you aren’t taking their time and money, you can pretty much do as you like.

You’ve noticed Americans don’t look at the homeless. Like they are invisible. By not looking, they can pretend the problem doesn’t exist, and they don’t have to do anything about it.

Throw in iphones, smartphones and it’s a miracle they notice anything.
