Saw a homeless woman talking to herself, walking toward the 7-11 I was at. She was really sweet with a good sense of humor. I went to get her a sleeping bag but my friends weren’t home so I gave her the comforter I have in the van. I got her some dinner and sat with her while she ate it.
She didn’t act crazy when she was with me. Maybe she only talks to herself when she has no one else to talk to. The tops of her hands were all cut up. I think it’s from the dry skin cracking open and bleeding. I gave a tube of triple antibiotic ointment I had in the van and a flip top can of beef stew with a spoon.
I didn’t say much while she was eating her dinner. I felt like if I asked her questions it might sound accusatory or judgmental or something. I just let her eat in peace and smiled at her when she looked up. I could tell she was very hungry yet the first thing she asked me for after I gave her the comforter was a pack of cigarettes. I said “no” so then she asked for food.
She said she’d only been homeless for a couple of days but I think it takes more than 2 or 3 days without a shower to smell like she did. Do people like her ever make it back to “normalcy” again? Poor dear lady. Society chewed you up and spit you out.
I could tell she was somewhat passive, like I have become. Passive people don’t do well most of the time. You always have to be moving forward. Kill or be killed. Or something like that.
