It’s Freeeeee!

Today, my neighbor-friend gave me a whole bunch of Thanksgiving food from a Thanksgiving event she did this weekend.  It was so good.

It seems like a few people gave me meals this weekend….almost makes me believe I could live the freegan lifestyle.  If you are wondering what a Freegan is, it’s someone who tries not to pay for anything.  He or she begs, borrow, steals (I do believe some of them actually steal…but certainly not all of them do) what ever they need in life.  They also barter and dumpster dive.

It would be cool to not pay for things but I definitely wouldn’t steal and I don’t want to mooch off of people.  That wouldn’t be right.  I WOULD like to dumpster dive for food though.  So much food gets thrown away….why not eat for free?

I think I mentioned in another post that I have a friend that dumpster dives.  She and her husband get all kinds of great things.  They give a lot away and they are going to sell some of it.  It’s very smart and cool.  I hope I can find someone to go with me soon on some dumpster diving expeditions.  I’m afraid to go alone.

I always wanted to be a princess but living in my van and even dumpster diving resonate more with me right now.  I’m Irish.  We are resourceful people.

Freegans? Wow, I’d never heard of that. I’ve worked retail and it’s true, we do throw away alot of stuff for free because of liability issues. Unfortunately, you can’t just put things on the side of the dumpster either because it looks untidy.

Yeah, I get the ‘untidy’ thing. I think it’s even more a legal issue. Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if stores would save one dumpster for “trash” and another for “stuff we can no longer sell”?

It seems a waste to throw so much away…especially food! There’s a dumpster diving meetup group in a city near me. I’ll probably go out with them sometime and learn the ropes so I won’t be scared. I might wait until it gets warmer though. It’s too cold to be out in allies now.

  3. Have you guys tried Craig’s List for free stuff? They have a Free Stuff category and some of the items are in pretty good shape.

I’m looking for a small camper right now for free or dirt cheap. I know there are folks out there with small, rotting campers in their backyards that wouldn’t mind giving it away if they knew someone needed it and would haul it off for free. I could use the windows, tanks, pumps, and other parts to help build my new camper. Maybe mow a yard or clean a house for the parts I need to build my new bug out camper. If this is the Freegan lifestyle, I guess I’m a Freegan.

Sounds like you are well on your way to Freeganville MG! I hope you’ll stay in touch and tell us how that’s going. I toy with the idea of getting a camper too. A private bathroom with a shower sounds like pure heaven to me! I’d only get one if it was super-di-duper cheap though!
