Foundation Part 2

Good morning!  Well I knew it would happen sooner or later.  I couldn’t quite make it through the night last night without using the restroom!  I held out as long as I could but finally at 4 am I headed over to Denny’s.  Denny’s is open 24 hours and I’m so glad I have one near me!

As I’m writing this,  I’m having  Denny’s pancakes and bacon.  The food here doesn’t quite taste “real” though.  I just feel bad using the restroom and not buying at least a little something.  Darn….no free wifi either!  (Thus the time lapse from when I wrote this and when I posted it.).  There ARE free rap music videos on the big screen across from me.  Gag!

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about my foundation idea.  I’d like to put together care packages for people who are homeless, focusing particularly on people who are sleeping rough.  My understanding is that sleeping rough means sleeping outside without a tent or anything.  Someone correct me if I’m wrong.  I have a partial list in my head of things I think might be wanted or needed in a package like this and I’d love to hear your suggestions too.

  1.  Toothbrush/toothpaste
  2. Waterless hand wash
  3. Hand towel
  4.  Canned food with flip tops
  5. Plastic forks for eating canned food with
  6. Body spray for women/after shave for men
  7. Phone card that can be used at a payphone

My mind’s gone blank so if you have any ideas, especially if you’re homeless yourself, please let me know.  I don’t know what the price limit would be on a package like this.  I do know I don’t want to keep it so cheap that it’s not even useful.

I guess next I’ll have to figure out where the money is going to come from for all this!  Again, I welcome your thoughts and ideas.  Okay, the Denny’s rap video circuit has looped back to the beginning again.  Time to go!

    Hi Maureen

I hope you are doing well.
I like you’re idea about the care packages. Dollar stores are great places to purchase those supplies. Also I’d like to add a couple more items to your list. These are things I’m always in need of. … a tube of antibiotic ointment and a box of bandaids. 🙂 You could fill one care package with the items you listed between $20 and $50(depending on the price and quantity of the canned food items and the phone card). Not bad if you only want to fill one care package.

Another idea is this. For the money you would have spent on filling one care package you could buy a …..hmmmm,….maybe a prepaid gas card… or Walmart card…. restaurant gift card….. or something similar 🙂 and hold a drawing once a month using that as the ‘prize’ for bringing in donations of those items you listed for your care packages. Don’t make it a competition to bring in the ‘most’ donations. Just make it a prize for bringing in ‘some, any, or all’ donations. Be sure to tell them what you’re planning to do with those items. You may get more donations that way and can fill more care packages.

When people bring their donations to you they write their name and email address so you can contact them if their name is drawn for the prize. I try to always keep a positive outlook about people as well as circumstances but you know, people tend to be more caring/giving if there is something in it for them.

    peace to ya

I subscribed. You be careful out there. I’m not far behind but always trying to stay at least one step ahead of losing my home. I’m thinking of putting an ad on Craigslist to trade my SUV for a van. Don’t know yet.

Strangely, I feel AHEAD now that I don’t have to pay for housing. I know it can’t last forever but right now I feel very free, like the world is my oyster.
