Current Plan

If things work out a certain way, I’ll start a full time “real” job soon. It is through a friend. If I work there a year, I might get a job with another company later (that pays more…since I will have a year experience) and move to a different area where I have friends. I would like to live in the van during this time to survive, get the van running better and maybe even save money. Ha! (that saving thing never works for me!)

Heck, I would like to live in the van indefinitely to save money but I have to make it more livable.

I’ve been thinking today that I need to get the air mattress BUT the plan has been to pull out the back bench seat and put the mattress on the floor. It sounds very comfy but I will lose some storage space (under the back bench seat). Storage is at a premium in the van.

If I do this plan, I’m just going to have to go to my storage space more often to change things out. Clothes are the issue. I like to look decent. I don’t really like going to the storage place everyday though. It’s a bit of a hassle. I can’t think of any way around it though. It’s easier than working a 2nd job to afford rent. That’s for sure.

About Maureen, Living in a Van

I'm a free-sleeper living in a van in the prettiest part of the world. I do this partly due to financial circumstances and partly because I love a good adventure.

Maybe you could get a vaccuum pack and use in on your clothes. I hear travellers use it to avoid baggage fees. Could you add one of those top thingys to the van?

I think if you throw a few bucks at the van, it will be infintely more livable.

I have to think a vacuum pack will leave irreversible wrinkles in clothes! (I’m assuming you’re referring to this notion of putting your clothes in a plastic-bag type thing and then vacuuming out all the air … )

Maybe I should get one of those things to put on the top of the van. I suppose they have locks on them.

  3. Rob says:

what do you sleep on in the van? the vehicle seats would be terribly uncomfortable, I should think.

  4. Maureen says:

I use the rear bench seat with a couple of blankets under me for padding. It could be better!

If you could build a plywood table and put a mattress on top of that, you could use the space under the bed to store plastic bins. We use baskets under our bed and carry clothes for over a week for two people.
