Bike and Dumpster Diving

I’ve been having some trouble getting work.  I had something set up to start a few days ago, but the job fell through.

I’m trying to figure out how to save money.  I would like to buy a bike for around $100 so I can save on gas.  I saw one somewhere for $60.  It’s probably junky but everything on Craiglist is $200 plus or is located too far away. (I don’t like drive too far these days.  The van is somewhat unreliable).  If I see the 60 dollar bike again, I think I’ll snatch it up.  I tool around town locally all day and the van just guzzles gas.  I could save a lot of money biking and naturally, it will be good exercise for me.  This is kind of a bike town where I live.  Tons of people ride around for fun on their fancy beach cruisers so I won’t be out of place at all.

I also want to dumpster dive for food.  There are people called freegans that never pay for anything so they only eat what they get from dumpsters or what is given to them.  I feel like I might need to do this because my money is getting pretty tight.

I know this all sounds pathetic but that’s where I’m at with things right now.  I think I need to try to implement these changes as soon as possible because if I wait til I’m broke to do them, it might be a bit of a shock to my lifestyle and I might get really depressed.

On a bright note…I have a bit of money trickling in and a part time employer left me a message this morning asking if I want to work for 5 hours tomorrow.  The answer is YES.

If I could bring my eating expenses down to zero….and my gas expenses down close to that, I wouldn’t need much at all to live on.  I hope I can do this.  If not, I think I’m going to have to go live with a relative back east.  I love my relative but this is not what I want.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention…I try to eat only organic food.  I’m afraid of pesticide and genetically modified food.  I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find organic food in dumpsters though.  I have thought about trying to befriend employees and trying to get them to put aside throwaway organic food for me….it’s hard for me to ask for help like this though.  What if they say no?

I'm a free-sleeper living in a van in the prettiest part of the world. I do this partly due to financial circumstances and partly because I love a good adventure.

Wah! 100 bucks! That bike must be gold plated and peddle itself. Goodwill sells them for less than 50 bucks, half that on every other Saturday.

Oh really??? Darn….I don’t know why I didn’t think of the Goodwill. I’m there all the time. Doh!

      • Ryu says:

They get new stuff all the time. If you went every 3 days you’d see new things. The good stuff goes away quick!

I found a 30 gallon fish tank with pump and sand for 40. I got greedy and was waiting until super saver Saturday so it would be half off, but someone bought it already.
