Last night I found a “better” spot to park the van in for free-sleeping.  It was 5 minutes from the “old” spot from last night but completely different.  It is in a neighborhood full of multi-million dollar homes and closer to the ocean.  I weighed out whether I would rather deal with criminals possibly breaking into my van in the middle income area or the police being called on me in the upper income area and I decided I would take my chances with the coppers.  And as much as I fear getting in trouble (fined….vehicle impounded etc.), getting in a tussle with a methhead could be fatal to someone.  I’d rather not have to go through that.

Anyway, I passed a very quiet night.  I don’t know if even one car passed by the entire night.  I got a luscious night’s sleep!  I felt so comfy I even got dressed, washed a bit and put on makeup in my van when I woke up.  Probably a little crazy but what the heck, it’s my first day of work and I didn’t want to mess up my hair by going to the gym.  I put my damp hair up in socks last night to create curls but if I go to the gym, the damp air might make the curls come out and I want my hair to look nice for my first day of work!  (Good excuse for not working out this morning right?)

Well, I’m off to work now.  Scared, but I will just take it one day at a time.  Looking forward to using the fridge, freezer, microwave etc. at work to store and prepare food.  My diet will get better and have more variety.  Yipee!

About Maureen, Living in a Van

I'm a free-sleeper living in a van in the prettiest part of the world. I do this partly due to financial circumstances and partly because I love a good adventure.

I’m sure that other mobile free sleepers use this trick of staying in rich neighborhoods. Should be alright if you rotate spots regularly. I think most of the difficulty would come from nosy neighbors rather than cops looking for trouble.

Good luck on your first day of work.

Hey, nicer neighborhoods are far better to sleep in overnight. I agree with Ryu though, I think you have more problems with nosy neighbors than cops. On the flip side though, when I lived in my apartment, I could have cared less who was outside.

As long as I didn’t hear anyone (as my apartment was far from the street) they could sleep there 24/7.

For sure. I imagine most people could care less. I know I never worried about it when I was pay-sleeping. Hehe…I just made up a new phrase. 🙂
