American Young People

I went to a grocery store and had them make me a sandwich at the deli.  The young man who made it was very clean cut and handsome.  He mentioned that he was doing this day on 30 minutes sleep.  In other words he had only slept 30 minutes that nite.  I hear this kind of talk more than I like from young people, especially in these low level jobs.  It’s very disturbing.

Ya see young man, while you are partying all night, Patel is learning computer programming so he can make 40k a year to start.  He may even be starting his own company where he could make millions!  Then there’s Li who is your age and studying to be a doctor.  He’s not smarter than you, he’s just thinking about his future.

Why is it only the newly arrived in the U.S. who care about their futures?

This is just foolishness.  Your youth is when you have the most energy and your brain can take in a lot of information.  You probably don’t have much responsibility so you COULD really focus on something.  You don’t have to be a doctor or a computer programmer but pick something and commit to being very good at it.

You only live once.  Don’t throw away your birthright.

About Maureen, Living in a Van

I'm a free-sleeper living in a van in the prettiest part of the world. I do this partly due to financial circumstances and partly because I love a good adventure.

Maybe he’s got two jobs. It’s very common these days. Working in the deli, he probably made about 11/hour, 30 hours a week.
